Philomena “Fannie” Zaffuto, Age 101. Passed away at the Village of Maple Heights. (formerly of 119 Truman St., Ebensburg) on April 30, 2024. She was born September 29, 1922 in Ward, WV to Annantonia (Storza) and Girolamo DeGiorgis and was raised in Revloc, PA. She married Stephen Zaffuto, who died June 16, 2009. She was predeceased in death by a Sister Marie and brothers Gino (Rose) DeGiorgis, Guido (Frances) DeGiorgis and Mario DeGiorgis with wife Donna DeGiorgis surviving. Survived by her four children, Mary Ann (Donn) Wagner of Boalsburg, PA., Stephani (Robin) Weaver of Vero Beach, FL., Barry (Debra) Zaffuto of Ebensburg and Joseph (Darla) of Centre Hall, PA. She has seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. As a young woman, Fannie worked at the Gallitzin Shirt Factory. During World War 2, she moved to Chester, PA to help in the war effort working as a true “Rosie the Riveter” as a welder for Sun Shipyards. While working at the shipyards, she also attended beauty school nights and weekends and was employed as a beautician for a short time before moving back to Ebensburg. While raising her family in Ebensburg, she was a long-time seamstress at JoAnn dress factory, retiring in the mid 1970s. Fannie was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, The VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Holy Name Catholic Church in Ebensburg. She was an active bowler and at age 80, she joined the Curves gym where she actively worked out into her early 90s. She was known as an excellent cook and seamstress. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Matevish and Matevish Funeral Home, Ebensburg. Funeral Mass Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Name Church the Rev. Brian Warchola. Entombment Holy Name Mausoleum, Ebensburg. In lieu of flowers please make donations to a Charity of your cholic in Fannie’s memory.
